Climbing, prostrate or erect herbs or subshrubs, rarely small shrubs. Leaves pinnately trifoliate; stipules bilobed or spurred at the base or not spurred, stipels generally present. Inflorescence axillary or terminal racemes or flowers in dense subumbellate clusters; rachis usually thickened and glandular at the point of insertion of pedicels; flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, 5-merous, perigynous; bracts and bracteoles +/- deciduous. Sepals 5, fused; calyx 2-lipped, upper lip of 2 lobes, completely or partly united, lower lip 3-lobed. Corolla papilionaceous, yellow, blue or purple; vexillum suborbicular with inflexed auricles and 2-4 appendages or rarely appendages absent; wings shorter than vexillum; keel truncate, obtuse or beaked, sometimes the beak incurved through up to 360°. Stamens 10, diadelphous (9+1), vexillary stamen free; anthers uniform. Monocarpellary, ovary sessile, 3-many ovuled, placentation marginal; lower part of style slender, obsolete or quite long, filiform or flattened, upper part thickened and cartilaginous, straight or curved, uppermost part barbate or hirsute on inner side, sometimes produced beyond the stigma to form a short to long subulate or rarely flattened or capitate beak; stigma completely lateral, oblique or rarely +/- terminal. Legumes linear or linear-oblong, cylindrical or flattened, straight or curved. Seeds mostly reniform or quadrate; aril obsolete to well developed, often 3- pronged.

Annual herbs, erect, twining or creeping, 20-60 cm tall. Stem hispid with spreading hairs. Stipules submedifixed, ovate, 0.8-1.2 cm long, acute, 4-5 nerved. Leaves pinnately trifoliate; petiole 5-21 cm long; leaflet blades ovate, elliptic or rhomboid (lateral ones oblique), 5-16 cm x 3-12 cm, sparsely pilose on both surfaces, generally 3-veined from base, base broadly cuneate, margin entire, apex acute or acuminate; petiolules small, pilose; stipels longer than petioles, linear, hairy. Racemes axillary, 4-many flowered in subumbellate clusters; peduncle 3-9 cm long; rachis usually thickened and glandular at the point of insertion of pedicels; bracts 4-5 mm long; bracteoles 3.5-4 mm long, linear-lanceolate or oblong, acuminate; bracts and bracteoles deciduous. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, 5-merous, perigynous, 1.2-1.5 cm long, greenish- yellow to yellow; pedicels 2-3 mm long. Sepals 5, fused; calyx tube 3-4 mm, glabrous; lobes 5, narrowly deltoid, 1.5-4 mm long, upper 2 connate into a 2-fid lip. Corolla papilionaceous; vexillum yellow-green outside, sometimes pink inside, suboblate, ca. 1.2 cm x 1.6 cm, apex emarginate; wings yellow, ovate, shorter than vexillum; keel falcate and incurved through 180°, green tinged with pink. Stamens 10, diadelphous (9+1), vexillary stamen free; filaments (free part) filiform; anthers uniform. Ovary sessile, ca. 8 mm long, incurved, hairy, 8-many ovuled, placentation marginal; style slender, quite long, ca. 1.5 cm, flattened, upper part thick and cartilaginous, hirsute on inner side, produced beyond stigma to form a short (ca. 1 mm long) subulate beak; stigma lateral, oblique. Legumes linear-terete, 4-9 cm x 4-6 mm, shortly hispid with pale brown hairs. Seeds 8-15, greenish or yellowish brown, shortly cylindric, 2.5-4 mm x 2.5-3 mm; hilum white.
